Sarwar Kamal is a Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at BGC Trust University Bangladesh (BGCTUB), where he also serves as Assistant Proctor. He joined the University in July 2023 after a decade-long career in professional journalism, bringing newsroom experience directly into the classroom. Prior to entering academia, Sarwar worked as a Staff Correspondent for the national English-language daily New Age and the online news portal banglanews24.com, and as a Sub-editor at the Daily Shangu, covering the environment, politics, health, and the Rohingya crisis since 2015.
Sarwar’s research examines journalism practice at the margins— particularly mofussil (regional) journalism in Bangladesh— alongside political communication, media ethics, health communication, gender and media, and the impact of artificial intelligence and new media on journalism. His recent work investigates political interference in regional investigative journalism and the psychological cost of precarious employment among mofussil journalists, and his research has been presented at international venues including the Global Investigative Journalism Conference and the IAMCR conference. He is currently an M.Phil. Researcher (2026–2028) in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Chittagong, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mohammad Morshedul Islam.
He is an Executive Committee Member of the Communication and Journalism Educators' Network (CJEN) Bangladesh and a member of the International Communication Association (ICA) and the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR). He previously served as the elected Press and Publication Secretary of the Chattogram Union of Journalists (CUJ).
